Qualifications

BSc MSc MBBS PhD FRCPsych

I am a Professor and consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist.  That means I am a medical doctor (not a psychologist) who specialises in the psychiatry of children and teenagers. I have degrees in both psychology and medicine from London University and trained in medicine at Guy’s Hospital. I remained at the University of London to train in general psychiatry at St George’s Hospital, London, and in child psychiatry at the Medical Research Council Child Psychiatry Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (Kings College London) and the Maudsley Hospital. I completed my PhD at Trinity College, Cambridge University.

  • Professor of Child & Adolescent Neuropsychiatry at KCL

  • Honorary Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist at the South London & Maudsley Hospital NHS trust, where I led the National Specialist Clinical Service for children with neuropsychiatric disorders, including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD).

Award

NHS Platinum Merit award - the highest award possible.

Research

I have authored over 300 scientific publications and is recognised as a world leading authority on the causes (genetics and brain basis) of childhood neurodevelopment disorders (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder). My research has focussed on identifying the causes of ADHD, ASD and related disorders of social function and communication. My research has been supported by awards from the MRC, Wellcome Trust, Action Medical Researcher, Autism Speaks, Tuberous Sclerosis Association and other medical research charities.
